Mother's Day

At Kate Hadfield Designs there are so many fabulous sets it is really easy to get inspired to use them. There are digital stamps which you can colour, coloured versions you can scrapbook or make into digital layouts. Papers, patterned overlays and doodles galore. No matter what your skill level there are so many goodies to play with.

One of the most fabulous things about being in this Creative Team is that we have free rein to make anything we want to using the sets in the shop. This is amazing for inspiring creativity as there are so many amazing packs to play with. I feel very, very lucky to be able to have this opportunity.

I am very late blogging this as we had Mother's day in the UK a few weeks ago.

I made this card for my Mother in Law. I try to make completely different cards for her every year on both Birthday and Mother's Day. It can be a real struggle to make something different each time and I was inspired to make this card having seen an example of this type of fold in a card making group on Facebook. I thought I would try to recreate at.

My focal point is the flower jug from the Tea Party Doodles kit. I chose the papers to compliment the colours in the image.

I used glitter card for the base layer and added floral papers which were a magazine freebie many many years ago.

The image was sized to 10cm high, fussy cut and mounted onto 3d foam pads. The sentiment was printed off my computer, cut using a die and then matted using the same papers.

The inside of the card opened out is how it is intended to be displayed. I created my first test run with paper to get my sizing right and I am so glad I did as it was such a help.

I added the papers to the back section first. Cut a heart out from the pop out section using a Sizzix nesting die and then stuck the 2 pieces of card together. Cutting the plain green was one of the most awkward parts as I dit the heart first and then trimmed the side afterward to make sure it fit properly.

After adding the patterned paper to the side sections it was time to decorate.
I used the flower jug again and lots of butterflies. Finally the dangling heart was a sentiment I printed off my computer twice, cut out white card hearts and sandwiched the twine between both layers.

I saw Mom earlier today and she still has this card on display. The beauty of it being that the main inside if the card does not specifically mean it can only be on display for Mother's Day.

Over at Kate Hadfield Designs there is lots going on. Kate is really generous with her freebies which are readily available. If you sign up to the newsletter you get access to an extra subscriber area the Doodle Den where there are loads more freebies. There is a gallery full of projects by the Creative Team and customers and so much inspiration for crafters and teachers. I would highly recommend you pop over there and join in the fun.

Cute As A Bug for Mother's Day

Stamper's Delights holds a Progressive Freebie challenge on Facebook every month. If you make a card with any of their images then the following month you can request that set for free. I love Janice's images and you get lots of images and sentiments when you take part so it is a win win.

I bought loads of images recently with a gift card prize and this is one of the images I chose Cute as a Bug. I love the smiley face on the flower and the cute little expression on the bug.

I coloured the image with Promarkers adding some pencil to the hair for definition. I added black dots so she looks like a ladybird, while gel pen for highlights and glitter marker to the wings for shimmer.

I have seen lots of triple easel cards recently but most seem to stack behind one another and obscure the one behind.  I wanted to try something a bit different so made it up as I went along.

I have seen a lovely card around blogland 'Rainbow Heart' by Mifta of MS Kraft Store and love the effect of the coloured strips. Inspired by this I used a lovely heart die that I got from The Works and cut this twice from black card. Behind the shape I added 1cm wide strips of scrap card in different colours. The strips were trimmed to the outside of the heart and I then cut another plain heart to sandwich inside. It was a bit fiddly but really happy with the results. I used double sided tape sheets for the heart and if I did it again I would have cut that first and added the strips to that instead of doing it the other way round and making it harder for myself..... lesson learned!

The image had been cut and matted using a Nestabilities labels 22 die. I had used the largest one for the image already so cut around this to make a larger one in plain black card.

I then started to place them together and test the easel function. Nothing I did looked right until I did it as a diamond pattern so used an 8" square card base and offset the shapes. I made a stopper using the sentiment which is an old digital from COLORink Digital Stamps who are now retired. It is perfect for this image and simply coloured with a marker.

The card base has a layer of thin black card and then a red spotty paper. I used self adhesive flower ribbon and added a little red gem to the centre of each one. The silver embellishment where they intersect is from a trim that was in the bridal section of The Range a few years ago and I added a black pearl to the centre.

Finally I added some of my favourite tiny glitter butterfly stickers and some lettering to the image. AS it doesn't specifically say Mother's Day Mom will be able to keep it on display for longer if she wishes and the bright colours behind the heart with be cheerful on even the gloomiest of days.

You can see in the image below how the card folds down. The sentiment is the stopper in front of the image and the 2 silver embellishments go behind the hearts so they stand up. It's a bit fiddly but once up, they stay up.

Mother's Day

It was Mother's day in the UK yesterday and the most sad one I have ever experienced due to the COVID-19 virus. Anyone over 70 has been advised by the Government to stay inside and away from other people and Social Distance. From Saturday morning all pubs, bars, restaurants and cafe's were to be closed unless it was for takeaway food. Of course this has all had a huge effect on Mother's Day for so many families.

I decided to make a box style card. I have seen loads of them but not made one myself until now. Having seen examples online I had a fair idea of how they went together but many seemed to be small. Me being me.... I had to go big or go home.

I started with some card that I got from Lidl a while ago. They had pads of 25 sheets of card all in different colours. They are 270 GSM and 24 x 34cm so quite a bit larger than A4. At only £1.99 per pad I bought one to check the quality and was so impressed I went back and bought a few more. They have been fab for matting and layering but also due to the thickness are substantial enough to make an A5 card or in this case provide the basis for the card shape.

I cut one sheet so it would provide the 3 sides at 11cm each. I scored these at 11cm down from the top to make the flap into a square. The back piece had a tab on each side so I could stick this to the shorter sides. I always use the red line double sided tape from Affixit Craft when making something that needs to be really sturdy. It is super sticky and I have never had a project discolour when using this tape.

The card strips inside the box were spaced 1.5cm apart and this gave me 7 strips in total to attach the decorative elements to. I measured 11cm for the width of the box and 1.5cm each side. Again using the tape I stuck this to the inside of the box. I made sure it would flatten down and then it was good to decorate.

I used 2 sheets of paper from my stash which had the same green mottled background. I cut a panel for the back section and left this with a straight edge. The 3 side panels were die cut using an Eyelet Squares Spellbinders Nestabilities die.

The image on the front is Giant Mushroom from Sheepski Designs. This is the progressive freebie image for this month from The Outlawz challenges. I coloured with Promarkers and Spectrum Noir, fussy cut the image and mounted onto thin foam squares to add dimension. I used green for the background as I wanted it to look like a garden with fairies and flutterbies flitting around above their heads.

The sides are decorated with a large flower from Papermania and a smaller flower from Craftwork Cards. In the centre is a large yellow gem. This is a bold flower and really stands out against the green background.

The back panel has a sentiment which was a digi image from a now defunct site AI Factory. I was on their DT for a time many moons ago...... I die cut this with a Grace Frame Die'sire die from Crafter's Companion. I used the Fanciful Flourish die from Cheery Lynn for the green vine as I didn't want it to look too plain when viewing from the top.

Then I got to work with the decoration inside. I honestly thought I had a little fairy die and having recently catalogued all my dies I was aghast to realise that I had not bought it when I thought I had.... I shall have to rectify that ! Anyhoo, I had some epoxy stickers from Royal & Langnickel that are pretty and glittery too so that was a nice bonus. I added these to acetate and cut round the sticker so it made it more rigid. I also did the same to some butterflies. I have a bazillion flowers so pulled together a selection of paper and fabric ones from my stash in pinks and purples. Some were Craftwork cards, some Ebay finds, some from Poundland. All elements are on 'sticks' of acetate which was recycled from packaging. I added them to the bars and just kept playing with angles and sticking them until I was happy with it.

Once completely assembled I folded it up to make sure it would be flat. Unfortunately it was about 2cm wider than my largest envelope so I had to make one for it using some designer paper from my vast collection.

This was for my Mother In Law and I was able to give it to her on Thursday when I took her shopping. I was able to see her open in when we Face Timed her and her reaction was priceless. I will admit it took me ages to make it. Partly because I hadn't made one before and partly as I underestimated how long it would take to place and space the elements on the bars. However, especially under the horrible circumstances we found ourselves in, it was worth all the time to see her reaction. She absolutely loves it and I am happy to have brought some joy to her at this time.

To anyone who visits my blog and reads this post we I truly hope you and your families stay safe and well. This virus has had such a tremendous effect on the whole world already and I feel that it will do for some time to come. Crafting more than ever gives us a creative release and for that I am tremendously grateful.

Stay safe everybody xxx

Happy Mother's Day

This is the card I have made for my Mother in Law as today is Mother’s Day in the UK.
I was a bit close to the wire as I finished it this morning !

I started with a Sizzix Framelits die cut Blossom Frames.

This is what it looks like when you have cut it. I bought it in the sale on the Sizzix site as I thought would look pretty if it was layered and decorated with a bit of bling.

I cut it from strong card and used my Promarkers and Flexmarkers to colour them in. If I am being honest I totally underestimated how long it would take to colour and create the different layers.

I added Stickles glue to some flowers, gems, pears and the big flower centres are from a decorative trim that was in the bridal section of the Range.

The sentiment is Female Occasions Sizzix Thinlits die set. The leaves are from a Funky Floral #2 set and the butterfly is a 3 part die from the Die and stamp combo Let’s Celebrate. I love how ornate it is and it cut perfectly.

The card layout was inspired by the current sketch at Sweet Sketch Wednesday which I rotated to fit the oval frame.

Both the papers are handmade mulberry paper which have got floral inclusions in them which was inspired by a challenge at Outlawz group. I am sure there are many crafters who have had some in our stash for years and not used it for a long while….

Materials Used in this Project are as follows:-
Card size – 8 x 8”
Paper – Handmade Mulberry paper
Sentiment – Female Occasions die set Sizzix
Tools Promarkers & Flexmarkers, Sizzlits Let’s Celebrate dies, Sizzix Framelits Blossom Frame, Funky Floral #2
Techniques – Die cutting
Embellishments - Stickles glitter glue, pearls, gems, hearts, trim from The Range
