Red Panda

It is the start of a new month and I am back with my DT hat on for

As long as you made a card with the June freebie you will automatically get the July image free. If you have not taken part before you can request this month's image so head on over there and join in the fun.

It is a fabulous way to use images from artists you many not have used before. Also sometimes the image is completely different to something you would normally use. It has been a good way for me to stretch my creativity and take me out of my comfort zone.

I would highly recommend anyone who is not already taking part to jump in and have a go. We are a really friendly bunch at The Outlawz.

This month we are sponsored by Fabrika Fantasy

We have been given this amazing image Red Panda which is taken from the Animal Kingdom colouring book.

I have to be honest and say when I first saw this image I gulped and wanted to run for the hills. I adore Red Pandas, they are in fact one of my favourite animals but I had no idea how to colour this as I have never done a fantasy fae type of image. Remember when I said Progressive Challenges can be a good way of working with images you would not normally choose???

Anyhoo, I started off with the red panda because I loves them and knew the colours. I then looked at the faint lines on the face which are probably for contouring but I saw it as emulating the red panda facial markings so decided to go with that. She needed fierce eye make up to compliment the look so she has red eyeshadow and black eyeliner. She was then ‘looking’ at me and the rest of the image just sort of happened. It was like she told me what colours she wanted. I promise I had not been drinking!

I have used my Arteza Expert pencils for the majority of the colouring and it took time to blend as I am still learning how to use them. This is the most complicated image I have ever coloured so it was a bit of a surprise really that I used the pencils. I used a Spectrum Noir gold metallic pencil for the background so it has a very subtle shimmer to it. I just felt it needed to be very muted to let the main image come out more.

A very talented card maker that I really admire is Carol Gill and she posted an anniversary card recently that is in a diamond point shape. I have seen a few of these around recently on blogs and Facebook but hadn’t looked into how they were constructed. Carol showed a photo of the inside back and it was so immediately obvious, a proper smack on the head moment. I had already pulled out a 6” square gold card blank out but had not not decided on the papers or anything so the card took a completely different direction. Thanks very much Carol for the inspiration for the shape.

So I trimmed the card front to make the point and added some leaf paper which is trimmed to leave a gold border. The same is done with the 2 triangles and then you place onto the card so the 3 points stand the front up. The inside of the card has a layer of brown paper with a vine leaf design and this is a complimentary backdrop for the card front. I added the image onto a marbled brown paper and then this section is lifted with some thin foam pads. The final touch is a circles sentiment from Craftwork Cards.

Having looked at the initial image pretty much at a loss as to how I could make a card with it I cannot tell you how pleased I am with this. It is an image I would never have chosen but I am so proud of my pencil work on this, it definitely shows me how much I am improving when I can spend the time doing the blending and adding the layers. The shape looks so complicated, definitely a special card (but a real so and so to get a good photo of!)

If you fancy having a go with this image I hope we will see you enter our challenge at The Outlawz and look forward to seeing the entries.
