On Friday it was a Bank Holiday in the UK to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE day.
Before the Covid-19 outbreak we were due to celebrate as a nation by holding street parties and all manner of different events. Due to the lockdown situation this was somewhat curtailed.
The neighbour opposite me had put a flyer through the doors to suggest we do something like have our lunches at 1pm at the end of our drive so we would all be able to celebrate together whist maintaining social distance.
Many of our neighbours put bunting up on the Thursday night and I didn't have any so I made some from cardstock and string and put it up on Friday morning. It was an amazing day spend with people who we have missed seeing properly for the last couple of months. The weather was fantastic and many of us were still out at 1am having imbibed a few alcoholic beverages. I think it was the blowout we all desperately needed after so long being cooped up.
The UK Prime Minister was due to make an announcement on the Sunday about the next steps and we were all fully expecting to be told that the lockdown situation would not change (and we were right!, not much has changed)
Anyhoo, I wanted to make a card for our friend to say thank you for organising it. I had used an embossing folder to make some Union flags, intending to cut the sections and piece together. I didn't have time to do them in the end but I thought it might work to make a card from.
I found this sketch from Feeling Sketchy and my plan came together.
The embossing folder is from the Portobello Road collection by Papermania. It is the first time I have used it so felt good to actually make use of it :) I embossed Red, White and Blue cardstock. White is the base layer and I then cut the blue and red sections to make the flag.
Using offcuts of card from my bunting I made a miniature version and added it to red white and blue bakers twine. I then added a sentiment.
The card base is a pre-bought one, I feel they are too flimsy for card bases so I usually put 2 of these together to strengthen. This was perfect for sandwiching the twine between the 2 cards.
We had been asked to keep our bunting up for a few days as a neighbour up the road had passed away 4 weeks before. Her husband had said she would have loved the celebrations. Her funeral was on Monday and many of us were outside in our driveways to send the car off, all clapping. It was a great sense of solidarity at a sad time for Terry and his family.
I popped the card through the door for on Monday afternoon and a short time later got a lovely text from her saying how much she appreciated it and that she would be keeping it on her dressing table. That is a great compliment to me.
I am linking this card to The Card Concept challenge 135. This image of patriotic Red White and Blue with flags is absolutely perfect inspiration for this card

This card stood out in the challenge page and I HAD to come and see it, and I love it and the fabulous story with it. Wish our street had been so enthusiastic, after I printed out and gave posters, just half put them up and only where you could just see it. I had the lot on my window, so good for you in getting it done. A fabulous card and I'm sure she will be thrilled. Thank you so much for joining us in our challenge at QKR Stampede this week. Good Luck and looking forward to see you again in our next challenge.
